Family Matters

  1. I believe in the 6 degrees of separation. My challenge is to find anyone who is related to me through this blog in which I will share with you my search into the past lives of my ancestors. I believe in coincidences. I recently 'found' a distant cousin (JW) who lives in Ireland. We are related through his father and my paternal grandmother. By amazing coincidence, it turns out that JW is also related to my husband through his mother. My husband's family of MacDonalds from the Isle of Skye in Scotland and JW's mother's family of McReynolds both descend from John Lord of the Isles through his eldest son Donald and his youngest son Alexander. Just one of the strange coincidences to cross my path on the journey into ancestry. I have traced the lineage of my mother in law and father in law back to royalty, and they both descend from numerous common ancestors in England, France and other parts of Europe. Their families migrated to Australia and they met up here oblivious to their common ancestry. The more I delve into the past the more I wonder..are we all related?
At present I am on the hunt for great Uncle Rex Morley Hoyes aka Rex M Morley aka Rex M Morley- Morley (assuming the initial M is for Morley...I have to ask..can one have too many Morleys) aka Fessenden Charles Rex Morley-Morley, Viscomte de Borenden. A colourful chap you might expect. More about him in another jotting about name changes ( just to whet your appetite.. he helped to win WW2 for England, built a secret airfield on his property Marwell Hall in Hampshire, owned a huge steam yacht, Warrior' originally built for the American Millionaire Frederick Vanderbuilt, was wanted by MI5, involved in arms trafficking for Israel and Hyderabad ..... but that is for another time.I haven't tracked down any offspring out there yet so maybe there is a large fortune awaiting me..or a title.. If you do happen to know of great Uncle Rex by any other name.. should he have left a debt.. don't give then my name!
I am embarking on this blogging journey in the hope that I might share some of my stories with others who share my passion for Family History.
Some topics to come... Skeletons in the Cupboards, Family Secrets, Success through Emails, Facebook and Google Books, Grave Matters, Strange Names, Why they changed their names, Why they left their homes.... and much more. I have been researching Family History for 11 years and have found in my family several convicts, a possible spy, discovered that not only do we NOT have a Welsh castle in our Welsh past BUT we have, in fact, no Welsh ancestry at all (this, after naming several children after the 'Welsh' side of the family; that a great grandfather was not in fact washed out to sea in Ballina and drowned but rather turned up years later dying of cancer hundreds of km away in Sydney (it's possible that he was a great swimmer isn't it?.. perhaps that's his swimming medal I have found amongst my possessions?); that a great uncle was not in fact an uncle but a cousin - his mother having become pregnant to her sister's husband and he being brought up as the son of his grandparents!( don't worry if that's confusing - it took me years to work it out) and that my own name is not even my own name.. It's an interesting journey. I hope someone will join me. Sharn
